Your exam
A circuit: a scenario on a door, 2 minutes to read it, 7 minutes in a room with one interviewer who will push on your answer. Read this page once, then go and stand at a door.

CanMEDS roles marked
Every station runs on the real clock, with a follow-up probe and a written report against your exam's own scoresheet, so you see what an interviewer would have written down.
Alberta AIMG
Eight stations of 9 minutes, including one role-play station with an actor, run virtually on Kira Talent and scored on the CanMEDS roles.
Alberta demands more before the MMI than BC does: proof of physical residence in Alberta, an English language test, an MCCQE Part I pass and an NAC pass.
These timings are the exam's own. Source: AIMG Program, Multiple Mini Interviews page.
Usually one follow-up. Finish early and you may get a second. After that the examiner asks nothing more, even if time is left.
How the result reaches you: A z-score sent straight to the residency programs. Candidates never see their own.
When it runs: The MMI is held virtually in the autumn. The eligible list does not reach CaRMS until late November. (AIMG Program, Multiple Mini Interviews page.)
What the examiner fills in
Three domains, then a score out of 10
Communication skills. Ability to address the station objectives. Overall rating. On the role-play station the actor scores you as well, and we show you that score too.
The three domains are the AIMG Program's own. The score out of 10 and the actor's separate score are from Dr. Cres's experience marking this exam.
The real exam runs on Kira Talent. Exam day here is built to match it: an orientation, a waiting room, and the platform moving you from one room to the next.
This circuit puts an actor in at least one room. Practice the role-play stations, not only the discussion ones. They are the ones people freeze in.
8 stations back to back, the way Kira Talent runs them: an orientation, a waiting room, and then you are moved from one room to the next with no choosing, no pausing and no marks until the last door closes. About 72 minutes.
You are given a candidate number and shown to the start of the circuit. Everyone starts at a different station, so the person beside you is not on the same one you are.
A different test entirely
No interviewer, no probing, no room. A scenario, two questions, and a timer: 60 seconds a question spoken, or 3.5 minutes shared across a typed pair. Most Canadian medical schools require it and many residency programs do too.
A standardized patient withholds until you ask. An interviewer does the opposite: they listen, and when you have finished they put a follow-up that presses on the hardest part of the case. Every candidate on a scenario meets the same follow-ups, in the same words. How many you get depends on the exam and on how much time you leave.
Professional. Communicator. Collaborator. Leader. Health Advocate. Scholar. Each rating has to quote the line in your transcript that decided it.
Hesitation, pace and accent take no part in the mark, and the marker is told so explicitly. What you said is what counts.
